Ground beef: You can use store-bought ground beef, or bite-sized slices if you prefer a chunkier style of beef for this recipe.
Broccoli: Baby broccoli or Chinese broccoli are good substitutes when making this beef broccoli.
Fresh garlic: I love to use fresh garlic whenever I can, and particularly in Asian-style cooking. I don’t recommend using garlic powder, but you can use it if that’s what you have.
Fresh ginger: As with the garlic, I strongly recommend using chopped fresh ginger. Ginger powder is okay too, but be aware of how much you use.
Onion: Any onions will work in this recipe, without altering the taste too much.
Olive oil: Any neutral oil would be a good swap out for the olive oil.
Soy sauce: Use your favorite brand of light soy sauce. You could use dark soy sauce, if that’s what you have on hand, but it will have a slightly different flavor.
Oyster sauce: Mostly added for an extra layer of umami to enhance the beef and broccoli.
Sesame oil: For a hint of toasted nutty flavor. You can skip it if you want.
Salt and black pepper: To taste. I recommend tasting the cooked beef before adding the salt, just in case the soy sauce you’re using is quite salty. You could also switch out the black pepper for white, for a kick of heat.
How to make ground beef and broccoli stir fry
Step 1: Prepare the Broccoli
Wash and cut the broccoli into small florets.
In a large wok or skillet over medium-high heat, add the oil.
Once the oil is hot, add the garlic, onion, and ginger, and cook for 30 seconds to a minute, until fragrant.
Step 2: Brown the Beef
Add the ground beef to the pan and use a spatula to break up the clumps.
Stir fry the beef until it’s browned and most of the moisture has cooked away, for about 7-9 minutes.
Season the beef with salt and pepper to taste.
Step 3: Stir Fry the Broccoli
Add the broccoli florets to the cooked beef and stir together.
If the pan is getting too dry, add a splash of water to help steam the broccoli and prevent it from sticking to the pan.
Once the broccoli is tender and slightly charred, add the soy sauce and oyster sauce, and continue to stir fry.
Finish with a drizzle of sesame oil over the top of the stir fry, and give it one last toss to fully incorporate all of the flavors.
Serve hot over white rice or noodles, garnished with sliced scallions, chopped cilantro, or sesame seeds for extra flavor and texture.
How to store ground beef and broccoli stir fry
Let the stir fry cool down to room temperature before storing it. This will prevent any excess moisture from forming in the container and prevent the food from spoiling.
Once cooled, you can store the stir fry in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days.
Reheat in the microwave in single portions at a time. Add a splash of water before reheating if the beef seems to dry.
