This Golden Turmeric Milk combines the earthy richness of turmeric with sweet cinnamon, honey, and a splash of vanilla to create a comforting warm drink, especially great for cold weather.
I am an avid tea and coffee drinker, but I am trying to watch my caffeine intake, and this turmeric drink has become one of my favorite hot beverages when caffeine is off-limits.
I love that it’s so easy to make from scratch, with just a couple of ordinary ingredients from the spice cupboard, and it tastes as good as any coffee outlet.

Golden Milk Recipe Ingredients
Milk: I use whole milk for a rich and creamy base. You can use almond, coconut, or oat milk if you like a dairy-free alternative. (I’ve even used milk powder and water, to see how it would turn out).
Ground turmeric: The star ingredient, with a pleasant, earthy taste. Freshly grated turmeric can be used if you can find it. I recommend using a good quality turmeric powder (preferably organic) for the best taste because I’ve had some not-so-great experiences with subpar turmeric powder.
Ground cinnamon: Gives a hint of sweetness without adding sugar.
Black pepper: For a pop of sharp spiciness, and very little heat.
Ground nutmeg (optional): I love to add a tiny pinch of ground nutmeg for a faintly woody, nutty warmth. You can skip it if you don’t have it at home.
Vanilla extract: Provides a sweet and aromatic quality to the spice drink. Vanilla bean paste or essence is also okay to use if you don’t have extract.
Honey: Sweetens and complements the spices. Maple syrup, agave nectar, or your favorite sugar substitute will work too.
How To Make Turmeric Milk Tea
Step 1: Heat the Milk
In a small saucepan, heat the milk over medium-low heat until it is warm but not boiling. Stir occasionally to prevent a film from forming.
Step 2: Prepare the Spice Mix
In a bowl, mix the ground turmeric, ground cinnamon, black pepper, and ground nutmeg (if using).
Once the milk is warm, add a teaspoon of the warmed milk to the spice mixture, and mix well.
Step 3: Combine Milk and Spices
Pour the milky spice paste into the saucepan and whisk well to ensure the spices are evenly distributed.
Allow the mixture to simmer on low heat for 5-7 minutes, allowing the spices to infuse into milk.
Stir occasionally to prevent burning, and don’t leave the boiling milk unattended.
Step 4: Sweeten and Serve
Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract.
Add honey to taste. Stir until the honey is fully dissolved.
Serve hot with a sprinkle of ground cinnamon on top.
Turmeric Milk Recipe Tips
Fresh vs ground spices: Experiment with freshly grated turmeric for a more vibrant flavor.
Straining for smooth texture: If you prefer a smoother texture, strain the golden milk through a fine mesh sieve or tea strainer after simmering, especially if using freshly grated or coarsely ground spices.
Make it a latte: Froth the milk using a frother or blender for a latte-like consistency. This adds a luxurious touch to your golden milk.
Golden milk ice cubes: Freeze leftover golden milk in ice cube trays. Use these cubes to cool down your favorite beverages or add a golden kick to smoothies.
Storing Golden Milk Tea
Store any leftover golden turmeric milk in a sealed container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days. Reheat gently on the stove or in the microwave, stirring well before serving.
