Ingredients

For the filling:

  • 5 apples peeled, cored, and sliced
  • 2 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar packed
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch
  • A pinch of salt

For the topping:

  • 1 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup brown sugar packed
  • 1/2 cup butter cold and cut into small pieces
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ¼ ground nutmeg

Instructions

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a baking dish or individual ramekins.

For the filling:

  • In a large bowl, combine the sliced apples, lemon juice, vanilla extract, brown sugar, ground cinnamon, cornstarch, and a pinch of salt. Toss the mixture until the apples are evenly coated.
  • Transfer the apple mixture to the prepared baking dish, spreading it out evenly.

For the topping:

  • In a separate bowl, prepare the topping by combining the all-purpose flour, brown sugar, cold butter pieces, and ground cinnamon. Use your fingers to incorporate the butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  • Sprinkle the topping evenly over the apple mixture in the baking dish.
  • Bake in the preheated oven for 40-45 minutes or until the topping is golden brown, and the apples are tender.
  • Remove from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes before serving.
  • Serve warm, optionally with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream.
