Homemade Garlic Butter Baguette Ingredients

I love to use fresh ingredients whenever possible, but store-bought substitutions work just as well in this recipe.

French baguette: I love using a day-old or frozen baguette in this recipe, but feel free to use any bread you have. Sometimes I even use leftover dinner rolls or hamburger buns, and they turn out great.

Fresh garlic: Fresh garlic is one of my favorite ingredients, so it’s always in my kitchen. Any minced/chopped store-bought garlic is a good swap out, but I wouldn’t recommend using garlic powder – it just won’t give the familiar flavor you want.

Butter: I only use butter for this recipe, mainly because I don’t enjoy the taste of margarine and other alternatives. Use whichever you prefer.

Finely chopped chives (optional): When I opt for chives in this recipe, I usually add it to the garlic butter mixture, rather than using it as a garnish at the end. You will have to take extra care not to burn the chives in the pan, though.

Salt (optional): A sprinkling of salt as a final garnish.

How to make Garlic Buttered Toast: Step by step

Making this toasted garlic butter baguette couldn’t be easier. If you can slice and butter bread, you’re good.

Step 1: Heat Skillet
Heat a skillet over a low heat setting.

Step 2: Chop Garlic & Melt Butter
Chop the fresh garlic finely and set aside.
Melt the butter in the microwave.
Combine the garlic with half of the melted butter, and stir well.
Set the other half of the melted butter aside.

Step 3: Slice, Butter, and Fry the Baguette
Cut the bread into ½ inch slices.
Brush the top of the slices with the plain melted.
Lay each slice in the skillet, buttered side down.
Brush the tops with melted butter.
Fry 2-3 minutes, or until golden and slightly crispy.
Flip the slices and fry the other side until toasted.
Turn the slices over again, and brush the tops with the garlic butter mixture.
Fry for 30 seconds (don’t burn the garlic).
Flip the slices, and brush with the garlic butter.
Fry for 30 seconds, and remove from the pan.

Recipe Tips

Don’t add the garlic butter mixture until the bread slices are toasted and crispy.

You want to get as much browning of the bread as you like, before introducing the garlic butter towards the end.

Storing Pan-Fried Garlic Toast

Most of the time, I save the leftovers in a brown paper bag in the freezer for up to a month.

Leftover toasted garlic baguettes make the best croutons, so don’t forget to toss them in a light summer salad or a comforting winter soup for the tastiest crunch.

If you love crunchy bread and fragrant fresh garlic, this French garlic butter toast is one of the easiest comfort food recipes you can make. It pairs well with almost every kind of family meal, salad, soup or stew. Give it a try with dinner tonight, and let me know how it turns out!
