egg and cheese sandwich

I used to make this salami egg sandwich as part of my Saturday morning routine as a teenager and it’s still one of my favorites.

I just love the savory smokiness of the lightly pan-fried salami, the melted cheese, and soft-centered fried egg, all piled high between 2 slices of bread, and dipped in my family’s Homemade Sweet Chili Sauce (we put this stuff on errthing!)

Recently I was pressed for time, and needed to get dinner on the table in record time, so I settled on this recipe, mostly because I had all the ingredients on hand.

I hadn’t shared this grilled sandwich idea with anyone in my family until then, and everyone was pleasantly surprised at how filling and tasty it turned out!

Salami Egg Grilled Cheese Ingredients

Besides the obvious, the only other ingredients are salt, black pepper, and the butter for pan-frying, but here are a few ideas for swap outs:

Bread: White, brown, and whole wheat bread are all suitable for use in this salami sandwich recipe, but any bread will work just as well. Thicker slices will hold their shape better.

Butter: You can use margarine or any other butter you prefer. I wouldn’t suggest substituting with oil.

Salami: The star of this hot sandwich is the salami. I don’t recommend leaving it out, but you can use your favorite smoky lunch meat for a similar result.

Egg: The semi-soft fried egg acts as a creamy sauce on the grilled sandwich, and I never skip it. It’s not a requirement that the yolk be runny though – fry the egg to your liking.

Cheese: Any soft cheese that melts well will work in this recipe. The stretchier the better.

Salt: If your cheese is salty, you can skip the added salt.

Black pepper: I find that black pepper seems to enhance the flavor of some cheeses, so I use it on the egg while frying, and a sprinkling more when assembling the hot sandwich.

How to make a Salami Egg Sandwich

Making this sandwich recipe isn’t complicated at all, beyond frying the salami, egg, and finally the assembled sandwich itself. Here’s the sequence of simple steps I follow:

Step 1: Fry the Salami
Slice the salami if necessary, add butter to a non-stick pan or skillet over medium-low heat.
Add the salami and fry on both sides until lightly browned.
Remove from the pan, and set aside.

Step 2: Grate the Cheese
Grate, shred or slice the cheese, and set aside.

Step 3: Fry the Egg
Add more butter to the pan and fry the egg to your preference.
Add salt and black pepper to taste.
Remove from the pan and set aside.

Step 4: Assemble the Sandwich and Fry
Add more butter to the same pan, and once melted, lay out 2 slices of bread in the pan, swirling them around to absorb as much of the butter as possible.
Load 1 of the bread slices with the grated cheese, cooked salami slices, fried egg, and season with salt and black pepper if needed.
Allow the bread to fry until the cheese starts to melt.
Close the sandwich with the second slice of fried bread, and press down firmly to seal the sandwich.
Flip the sandwich and fry for another minute or two, or until dark golden brown.
Remove from the pan and serve hot.

Salami Grilled Cheese Recipe Tips

Use cheese varieties that melt easily.

It’s not necessary to fry the salami – I just prefer it.

Don’t add too much salt. The cheese and salami may already contain enough salt.

Don’t forget black pepper – it complements the egg and cheese well.

Storing a Toasted Salami Egg and Cheese Sandwich

For leftovers, allow your hot grilled sandwich to cool completely, then wrap it up tightly in foil, sandwich, wax, or baking paper, and place it in the fridge for up to 2-3 days.

When you’re ready to reheat, pop the unwrapped sandwich in the air fryer for a few minutes, or in a pan on the stovetop, until heated through.
