This Sweet Chili Pepper Sauce uses just 3 ingredients to make a quick, sweet and spicy dipping sauce for sandwiches, egg rolls, and all kinds of snacks. And it’s ready in only 3 minutes!
I’ve been making this sweetened chili sauce for years. It’s an old family recipe that was created out of necessity more than anything else. Whenever we’d run out of store-bought sweet chili chutney (that we put on almost everything!), this spicy sauce recipe became our go-to.
I love dipping my Grilled Cheese Salami and Egg Sandwich in this sticky hot sauce – it’s just so good! It’s also brilliant with fish dishes, fried eggs, and even as a spicy burger sauce.
This is unlike Thai sweet chili sauce since it uses jam in place of sugar, and it doesn’t contain any garlic, making it even easier to throw together

Homemade Sweet Chili Jam Ingredients
Apricot jam (jelly/fruit spread): Where I live, apricot jam is very common in households, and it’s especially popular with kids as a sweet sandwich spread. If you can’t find apricot jam in store, it’s readily available online.
Vinegar: I use brown vinegar in this recipe, but swapping it out for white and other varieties should be okay. Apple cider vinegar would be great in this recipe too.
Dried chili pepper flakes: I always have dried African bird’s eye chilis on hand, but any mild to hot dried chili flakes you like would be a great substitute.
How to make Sweet Chilli Sauce
Step 1: Make the Sauce
In a sauce bowl, add the apricot jam, vinegar, and dried chilies, and stir vigorously to distribute the chili flakes. And you’re done!
Tips
If you really want to, you can heat the jam briefly in the microwave, before adding the remaining ingredients – about 30 to 45 seconds should be enough.
Give the chili sauce a taste and adjust with more vinegar or chili flakes to taste.
Storing Sweet and Chili Sauce
Store your sweet chili dip in a glass airtight container. It doesn’t need to be stored in the fridge.
Before using, I suggest giving the sauce a quick mix to thin it out a little.
If you love hot dipping sauces, I suggest you give this diy sweet chili sauce a try, and let me know your favorite way to use it!
